FAQs

Got a question? We’re here to help.
  • What is the difference between a gravity retaining wall and an anchored retaining wall?

As described earlier, an anchored retaining wall uses cables attached to anchors to secure the weight of the wall and the retained materials. The anchors are secured to the ground behind the wall, pulling the wall back to support the weight. A gravity retaining wall, however, are stand-alone walls that slope backward to prop against the retained materials, using its positioning to support the weight of the wall and the materials.

Another difference between the two wall types is the thickness of the walls. Gravity retaining walls are constructed with thicker materials, making the wall thicker and more supportive on its own. Anchored retaining walls, however, are constructed with thinner materials, relying more on the support of the cables than the heftiness of the wall.

  • How do soil properties affect the design of the wall?

Properly understanding the soil properties of the materials involved in constructing your retaining wall can be a make-or-break aspect of the construction process. The exact importance of understanding the soil depends on the size of the wall you are looking to install, but, regardless, it is essential to know the characteristics of the soil you are dealing with to construct a long-lasting wall.

For larger walls, tests should be made on the exact soil at the location of the build prior to construction. This allows engineers and architects to prepare for whatever Mother Nature has in store for the soil type and its effects on the integrity of the retaining wall. Prior to construction on smaller walls, data collected from samples and tests in similar or nearby soils can be collected and used in place of data collected from your soil. These tests and samples will provide builders with the most accurate information about soil type and with the best prediction of how to construct your retaining wall to withstand the elements specific to your location.

  • What is the cheapest retaining wall?

The cheapest retaining wall option is poured concrete, but that may not make it the best option. Poured concrete comes in at about $4.30 per square foot, making it the cheapest material to use for your retaining wall. Poured concrete has its limitations, though, namely in terms of the anchored retaining wall design. However, there are a plethora of design options available when using concrete blocks, but this comes at a more costly expense. The durability is practically the same for both materials, so they really only differ in price.

There are also many more material options available to construct your retaining wall. If you are wondering what the best option is for you and your needs, feel free to contact us for professional advice!
