A gravity retaining wall, however, are stand-alone walls that slope backward to prop against the retained materials, using its positioning to support the weight of the wall and the materials.

Gravity retaining walls are constructed with thicker materials, making the wall thicker and more supportive on its own. Anchored retaining walls, however, are constructed with thinner materials, relying more on the support of the cables than the heftiness of the wall.
